Dizziness and Vertigo

"Struggling with dizziness or vertigo? You're not alone! These unsettling sensations often stem from inner ear issues, neck tension, or balance challenges - conditions that physiotherapy can effectively address.

For older adults, dizziness and vertigo are particularly common, with studies showing that up to 30% of people over 60 experience these symptoms, a prevalence that rises to 50% for those over 85.

Vestibular vertigo, which includes conditions like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), has a 12-month prevalence of 5% and an annual incidence of 1.4% in the general population, but its likelihood increases with age due to age-related changes in the vestibular system.

BPPV, one of the most frequent causes, affects 8-10% of individuals over 60 and has a recurrence rate of about 15% per year, with some studies noting up to 50% recurrence within 5 years.

The good news? Physiotherapy can make a significant difference. For BPPV, targeted repositioning maneuvers and exercises often lead to symptom resolution in an average of 2-3 sessions, while non-BPPV dizziness may take around 4-5 sessions to improve, depending on the underlying cause.

Evidence supports physiotherapy’s effectiveness: vestibular rehabilitation (VR) has been shown to reduce dizziness, improve balance, and enhance quality of life in older adults, with up to 80% of patients with BPPV experiencing relief after just one session of VR. For chronic dizziness, personalized VR programs can significantly lower the risk of falls—a major concern, as falls are the leading cause of accidental death in people over 65.

At Cheltenham Home Physio, we use targeted exercises, manual therapy, and personalized care to help you regain stability and feel like yourself again.
